So the US police has a lot of military equipment on their hands and when a situation arises in which such equipment comes handy, they run away.

Those two aren't contradictory. I think that they should have it for riots, but if it's just sitting somewhere and is only used for parading around then they shouldn't spend money on it.
@matrix what's the point of paying taxes when rioters and looters burn all the places to get burgers?
