Metro 2034 and 2035 are completely different from Metro 2033 and I'm not sure if it's a bad thing.
2033 focuses on Artyom and his journey while building up the world and mainly the atmosphere of the metro. Describing in great detail the tunnels, spending a lot of time in them and thus making 2033 horror book. The other books skip vast majority of that. It makes sense though as at some point it would start being annoying, repetitive and no longer scary.

You need to read the books in order as they build upon each other and not just with the story.
