@matrix a proper open-world pokemon game would be badass

@matrix Make it a mobile game.

No seriously, rebuild each generation as a single player RPG with new controls and camera perspective. No F2P "coins" or chests or any of that. You buy it, you play it, you save, you continue later. The absolute most "the cloud" should be doing is backing up a save file.

The cardboard cutout of adventure is fantastic on a commute. Just like it was 20 years ago.

@r000t That's true. The best mobile games are all the Pokemon games emulated.

@matrix oh also, single player pokemon game works where the internet doesn't. just like it did 20 fucking years ago.

@r000t @matrix pokemon go should have had proper pokemon mechanics instead of that niantic bullshit

you start with a starter depending on your region, actually fight and/or catch the pokemon (pokeballs regenerate over time with a cap, additional ones can be bought with cash), and can challenge other players nearby (the other player gets info about number in party, max/min/avg level and can choose to decline)

participation in pvp gets you in game currency (winner gets a bit more) that can be used to purchase TMs/EV modifiers
@matrix
The issue with pokemon is pretty simple:
They have an anime
They have a manga
They have a bunch of movies

Why are the games not drawing (not copying) from the experience they provide? It's kinda strange they copy elements from other pokemon media that they like but they do the same basic pokemon plot development for every game.

The whole "it's a game made for kids" excuse doesn't count because the anime is clearly made for kids and even at its worst it's still more interesting to look at.
@matrix Pokemon was a grand adventure by the standards of the day and its platform. Pokemon Gold and Silver expanded on this and gave us an even bigger adventure. But after that the games stopped really getting bigger and more ambitious, even as the gaming industry around it did. So Pokemon slowly stagnated to the point where we are now. It had some good moments after that, but never really set its sights on making the biggest and best game possible. And Sword/Shield being on the Switch really hammers home how limited Pokemon is now in ambition.
