I don't get people's problems with matrix and or element, both work flawlessly on my end 
both are great software and I recommend them over xmpp with it's convoluted extensions and any proprietary system any day

@nekojanai I was never able to make a voice call but the chatting experience is great. My main issue is that you can't see history of encrypted chats.
You need a powerful server though.
@matrix your homeserver might not have had a working stun/turn server

matrix is great but the bar for hosting is pretty high, even for a single user, its also not as simple as IRC or mumble. Id love to host a matrix once their golang server releases for production
