AV1 is still absolutely unusable because of how slow the encoders are
I'm not asking for real time. I'm just asking for a few minutes of video to not take hours.
@matrix also decoding is quite painful too.

That doesn't really help. They barely utilize the resources given.
@matrix yeah I just don't imagine how any of that cpu effort or wall time comes back no matter how many people download the video at 500kb less.
Even Rav1e, the fastest one, is unbearably slow.
