@matrix to be fair, as someone deep into new adult fantasy/young adult fantasy, fantasy bookshelves are dominated by dead men and contemporary female authors
@matrix the only way I'd agree with what the person is bitching about it a the fact that copyright terms need to be reduced dramatically. It's been 70 years since the Lord of the Rings was published, and some megacorp will keep profiting from it for another 70 because of a government enforced monopoly. I think we are going to soon see similar problems with music and movies (and eventually video games) because high fidelity audio and video have been around so long that any given artist is going up against the greatest hits of the century at all times.

I figure 15 year copyright terms with a one time 15 year extension you have to apply for is more than enough. Beyond that you're not giving people an incentive to create, you're giving them an incentive to hoard other people's ideas.
@sj_zero @matrix The issue is that no matter how short you set the limit, corps will lobby to have it extended. Setting a hard limit on it, no matter how short, opens up arguments for extending it. Call it a "slippery slope" fallacy if you want but this is something that has already been proven and has already happened countless times. It's why the system is as fucked as it is now.

@matrix Jordan was a crap writer. Geat world building no idea how to end a book. Go read Brandon Sanderson, anything from Cosmere will change your life

@Krez @matrix Good to see someone else that enjoys Brandon Sanderson. He's also a great inspiration for new authors, goes through the process of writing.
@matrix You can always order in the book that you want. There is only so much space in the stores for books. Personally, I'm glad space is still dedicated to the classics of the genre to introduce people into it. People tend to discover books through word of mouth or through online... less so on the book shelves now I think. Especially with the market being saturated as almost anyone can market their own book now.
@AlbinoMutant @matrix Really? She clearly doesn't know how to market books then. The authors she mentioned are the lure into the store for me. If it were just a bunch of unknown authors or there were no set series then that would put me off even going.
@matrix Me leaving Barnes and Noble after turning women writers' fantasy novels around so the cover isn't facing out
@matrix Fonda lee is a decent writer but people aren't gonna be reading her books 70 years from now. Sanderson and GRRM ( if he ever finishes his book) will be read decades from now.
@matrix Yet another facet of society that owes everything to dead white men, complaining about dead white men.
@matrix
literally the foundation of western fantasy
"waaaaah where women"
@matrix
normal aspirations: I want to write a novel that will be so good that even a hundred years from now people are bitching that their works are struggling to compete against it.

her (pretend) aspirations: I want to write a novel that's given more attention right now, but then expired and forgotten as soon other people write newer stuff.

Yes, such is the way of things. Perhaps one day you'll be the dead person people are struggling against.
