It seems incredibly inefficent, ineffective and retarded.

Why do it that way? Why not just shoot them/stab them etc? Or poison their rations. They don't even have to kill them with the poison. They could just make them sick which would give them reason to take a few aside at a time to be transferred to a "hospital camp" where they could just kill them quietly without a mass panic or whatever.

Also: The Germans did have access to much deadlier poison gas. Why use a delousing chemical?

Bullets are needed for war. Stabbing takes forever. Poisoning food means you either need to go around collecting bodies or making them sick for a transfer to a "hospital camp" doesn't solve the problem of killing them. Gas is easy, impersonal and you have the bodies in one spot.
They didn't use just zyklon b but zyklon b probably because of cost and that you get hydrogen cyanide from sugar beet processing waste.
