Sidonia no Kishi movie is finally available but nobody has translated it yet :feelsbadman:

@matrix nobody ever seems to translate OVAs or movies anymore ever since the streaming services became popular. The fansub scene is dying from laziness :(

@matrix well, not /nobody/ because I know that @coolboymew translates stuff, but still, the scene is essentially dead these days compared to just a few years ago

@coldacid @matrix nobody translated OVA back then too to be fair. I remember picking up the Blood Lad OVA and it was awful. It started great then the translation slipped until it was eventually incomprehensible

@coldacid
Yeah, when you see old posts listing subbing groups, like 95% of the links are dead.

@coldacid
I'm trying to write a script that auto creates subtitles with Google Cloud and translates it, but machine translation isn't enough.

@matrix if what I've seen on sadpanda is any indication, machine translation is worse than untranslated. It makes olddog rewrites and DUWANG look like high literature.

@coldacid @matrix machine translation of colloquial Japanese doesn't work.

@Moon @matrix fuck, machine translation of colloqualisms between two languages in the same language sub-family doesn't work. There's no fucking way we'll have JP<->EN translation as the languages are spoke without having general AI first.

@coldacid @matrix I need to try the Amazon one to see if it's any better. I doubt it but worth a shot.

@Moon @matrix when Google Translate can go between English and German colloqualisms without butchered or untranslated terms, I might believe any kind of translation between Indo-European and Japonic languages /might/ have a chance of not being entirely fucked up.

@Moon @coldacid @matrix A big problem with translating Japanese is how often subjects are dropped from sentences in Japanese. Deciphering who did what to whom becomes much harder without those.
@heavensfeel @coldacid @matrix it seems like a significant amount of writing even intentionally uses this ambiguity
@Moon @matrix @heavensfeel @coldacid
really isn't difficult for humans, (and spoken english does much the same; just fewer-ly when written) but now-computer can't into selective memory and world-modelling; need something nearer proper agi, both model-breadth and conscious attending

same reason there's no threat of "computers doing the programming for you"; already exists and is called a compiler; still need to tell it what you want
