This was because well, it was extremely popular in the 90s to pretend to be gangsta. Even if they lived in the hood every single rapper would make up stories about the crazy shit they lived through or heard about. Dr Dre comes to mind as an example of this. Some would be outed as having middle class backgrounds and faking even that and a few had their careers ruined over this. Yes even in the 90s they got canceled over this.
