Yeah, it looks like a tactic. They cannot argue against the core argument so they first frame the scene as a start of turning into a nazi, then preface the argument with getting triggered by reading a book about a black guy and end it of with a racial slur.

Call of Duty AW is actually fascinating story wise because of this tactic being used and accidental redpills: aside from the fact that they used an IRL sex pest as a bad guy before he was outed as being a sex pest, the bad guy has some valid points. Namely: the premise is that he's the leader of a megacorp that combined traits of Tesla, Blackwater, and Raytheon and really wants to rule the world by replacing shithole governments. Why? Because shithole governments want stability most of all instead of USA imperialism, and to prove it they've even managed to rebuild Baghdad. There's also glimpses that unlike the real world versions, they've managed to develop advanced technology in more ways than just military. You're recruited into this because the US military fucked you over in an operation that left your best friend dead and you crippled.

It's only when you see the plot twist (he let a terror group thrive and in particular let nuclear reactors fail in order to turn America into a police state) and his reaction to finding out about it that he's suddenly the bad guy because suddenly he also has a personality shift from "hyper capitalist replacing failed governments" to "TEAM AMERICA WORLD POLICE". Essentially it's like the plot twist in Haze minus the drug mechanic (a cool one imo that would work better in an indie game). Some of the final missions take place in this rebuild Baghdad military base as the US military drops bombs on it. The cherry on top is the fact that they release a bioweapon that's targeted towards everyone (but your team because you defected), and then you're taken to a very obvious death/prison camp level. I'm not even joking. In the end you're supposed to forget the USA fucked you over too, that you're bombing Iraq again, and that his tone was vastly different in the first half of the game. The writing is very ham fisted overall too. You never see the motives of the terror group (which is a thrift store copy of eco-terrorists) aside from basic stuff, and in the second half of the game the terror group doesn't even exist seemingly.

The problem is, it's a 5-7 or so hour linear single player instead of a deep fpsrpg, so aside from coming out of the Hollywood camp the story struggles due to this. There are a lot of times where the story themes could have worked in an indie Deus Ex clone because holy shit some of the story elements are unintentional redpills. Megacorp fucking things over? A terror group that ends up being memory holed when they're gone along with their motives never being told to even you the player? The megacorp guy actually having a point? The USA bombing middle eastern shitholes because they're not under their power?

I could probably write an essay about how crazy the plot of AW is like those bitchute guys analyzing Far Cry 5 tbh because man oh man. At least the gameplay is fun though.

Er the story shifted, not the "bad guy". The bad guys personality shifted from CEO rebuilding trashy countries to "I'll murder you no questions asked" on a dime. There's next to no hints this is coming up, except for the fact that there's the cliche "other group helping the protagonist in the nick of time" moment.

To make matters worse, the plot twist is revealed in the fakest manner. In the game the terrorist guy gives you a USB drive with the incriminating data (how did he get this?). In reality some angry person would pass it to some altmedia source (veritas etc), some larger media who hates these guys too (the intercept when Glenn Greenwald ran it, etc) or leak it somewhere. This game came out a few years after the Collateral Murder/diplomatic cable and Snowden leaks happened so maybe the glowies helping didn't want that to be referenced though.
