Not sure about networked storage, but once I've used a file on a slow external USB 2.0 hard drive as a swap partition to build gcc on an old ARM machine with only half a gigabyte of RAM. It took it several days to do it, but… What can I do — life's unfair, I've been too lazy to mess with cross-compilation
