That's how it's usually called in japanese, yeah (some historical linguistic mess probably)
for eigo the "go" part means "language"

eigo is the language. The Japanese just name UK/British stuff "English" quite like we'd say "anglo".

Also Wiktionary says igirisu comes from Inglês (Portuguese), explains why it's quite awkward.
