@Evil_Bender @matrix Watched a vid the other day where a guy argued that 2000 was lowkey best because it was basically XP without the teletubbies GUI.
As soon as I meet someone that actually used 2000 I will have to ask them if they agree with that.

I never used it. I worked at a place with WinME it sucked

Windows XP was the first version of Windows to require online activation. Windows 7 was actually a better OS.

Windows 2000 was the last version of Windows you could run without online activation.

"Best" is always going to be subjective. A support tech has a very different idea of what's best from say a graphic designer. He wants supportability, stability and configurability. Looks are at best secondary. To a heavy user, the user interface is far more important, Some like looks, others performance.
From a tech perspective Windows 10 pro is miles ahead of windows 7. It just is. Windows 11 seems to me to be just a re-skin of Windows 10 with the major emphasis being on removing configuration options, which does not strike me as being an improvement. And it's ugly.

The base system is, yes. The problem is removing all the bloatware/spyware vendors and Microsoft load into it.

I haven't even looked at it. I don't have anything here new enough to run it, and when I just tried to create a VirtualBox virtual machine for it it just hung while trying to boot.

But Microsoft's spyware and intrusiveness has gotten even worse from what I hear.

@James_Dixon @Snidely_Whiplash @matrix @Evil_Bender I hear usability has taken a nosedive, there's all kinds of menus and settings screens that don't behave as you'd expect and there's even less user freedom to change anything. So now on top of having to install all your favorite software on LTSC since the included apps are all bloated garbage, you have to install all kinds of third part hacks, tweaks, and overhauls just to make the base system usable. I suppose some day I might have to install it, but for now I'm just going to let other people suffer through it and the customization software options mature and stick to a firewalled Windows 10 machine for gaming. For any actual work these days I use Mac anyway, arguably even more restrictive in some regards but at least it runs the apps I want and mostly stays out of my way. Plus app1piece.com is amazing.
