> Puts computer near giant magnet

> Computer stops working

Many such cases.
@Humpleupagus @matrix Typically the room is shielded so external computers aren't affected much.

MRI scanner are kind of based in that those offgas helium, which has been reported to make demon rectangles like iphones cease to operate (the helium diffuses through tiny gaps and makes oscillators cease to work, which means the device ceases to work unto the helium diffuses out again) - but it seems that issue is fixed now.
@Suiseiseki @Humpleupagus @matrix with the strengh of the MRI in the image, you could put the computer inside the shielded room and it would still work fine. In fact some MRI have a field that extends way past the magnet room and control computers are inside the 5 gauss limit (the ""safe"" limit)
@2ch @Humpleupagus @matrix >and it would still work fine
In most cases yes, but I would expects unexpected errors to increase due to bitflips and the like.
@Suiseiseki how would a static magnetic field induce bitflips? (excluding magnetic storage)
@2ch It's not a static magnetic field like a permanent magnet - it's a rapidly adjusted magnetic field to scan different parts of the body.

Yes, magnetic storage will likely slightly bitflip more often.

MRIs output a massive amount of RF noise and if any of the data lines between the CPU and RAM aren't perfectly impedance matched - the data lines also work as antennas and such RF noise could easily induce bit flips.
@Suiseiseki the changing magnetic field is orders of magnitude below that of the main magnetic field of the MRI.
RF produced is proportional to the main magnetic field, I doubt it would be an issue for standard clinical MRI in the room at a reasonable distance from the scanner
@2ch RF is only not an issue as the room is shielded. If there's a hole in the shield, radio transmission is impacted.
@Humpleupagus @matrix Won a bet with a magnet once. iMac bragged I could not delete/bypass the corporate log-in on their computer. Heh...
