@matrix the Japanese writing system is objectively retarded
@matrix
ackshually, that final one should be Thai
@matrix I wish english would use 20 writing systems that change based on 100 different arbitrary factors. But then some autists would still learn it to read "warhammer" books in their original version
@matrix actually when I think about it, english does have that for pronounciation

@teto yep, some English accents are basically incomprehensible

@matrix no. I don't mean accents or dialects. I mean this crap:
A classic example of English pronunciation inconsistency is the "ough" spelling, which can be pronounced in multiple ways depending on the word:

"though" → /ðoʊ/ (like "go")
"through" → /θruː/ (like "true")
"tough" → /tʌf/ (like "cuff")
"cough" → /kɒf/ (like "off")
"drought" → /drɔːt/ (like "bought")
"hiccough" → /ˈhɪkəp/ (like "hiccup")
@teto
Just pronounce it consistently! problem solved!
@matrix

@teto Most of these used to have a consistent pronunciation and then the sound used basically dissappeared (possibly due to post black death social changes).
Yeah, english has retarded pronunciations for some words but they feel less random than Japanese imo

@teto @matrix > If you pronounce "gh" as in "tough", "o" as in "women", and "ti" as in "ambition", then "ghoti" is pronounced "fish".
@teto @matrix English was too cool for spelling standardization after pronunciation changed, foreigners just need to git gud.
@JulioReich @matrix last adjustments in German were like in the early 2000s... Some boomers refuse to adapt to it but it just made sense. Like logical sense.
@JulioReich @matrix and yes it does make reading older German texts harder. But you just learn to do that once and then you're fine reading 1930s German news papers just fine. Which also has adjustments of their own from previous conventions.
@teto @matrix I like how English keeps its history alive in plain sight, you get a glimpse of how people would have spoken in Middle English and in some cases, Old English.
@JulioReich @matrix yeah and if you go back far enough they just speak saxon (German). Either way that's a bad reason to never update spellings
@teto @matrix I wish Germans legitimately used all the longest ridiculous words and phrases they're memed for in reality because that'd be hilarious and probably make Turks angry and kill each other in a pique of frustrated rage or something idk.

@matrix

you have to have a way to segregate those dirty gaijin words.

@matrix I'm surprised the Chinese mastered the rudiments of civilization seeing as their written language is total tard-ass.

@matrix

I'm not agreeing that the Latin alphabet was cooler than runes. Also, it is obvious that the runes were inspired by the Latin alphabet.
