They've essentially got a monopoly and could push many bad practices without there being decent alternatives for gamers if they wanted.
Yet somehow Steam seems to be far less inflicted by greed than other companies. Not sure if Gaben is to praise for that.
Of course Steam isn't perfect. Their current cut of game sales is way too huge. It might've been acceptable back in 2005 or so when server costs were higher and sales volumes lower. Steam has given back a lot to the community in turn using that money (god bless proton, steamvr and the steambox push) but they are still taking a huge chunk out of game sales.
Steam needs some competition to keep them at least a little bit in check.
But the Epic Store isn't competition, it's just a parasite.
