But something you need to understand about federation, is that a reply to a single person is pulled down by the same number of servers as a "top-level" status. It goes to all followers.

In under 10 seconds, the caching layer served 1.67GB. If you are hosting your instance at home, just get a cheap-as-fuck VPS as a reverse proxy; it only needs enough resources to run nginx.
