Our new Pleroma 2.2 release (https://pleroma.social/announcements/2020/11/11/pleroma-major-release-2-2-0/) now has an option to generate thumbnails on-the-fly which are then cached by nginx, just like remote media. This can help a lot if you use clients that are on some kind of restricted data plan!
