The default meaning of 車 is a car, but the historical meaning is wheeled vehicle
電車 - electric train
自転車 - bicycle
自動車 - automobile
馬車 - horse-drawn carriage
汽車 - steam train

so an electric car is 電気自動車 :weirdChamp:
