Ubports has released an update for their mobile OS Ubuntu Touch dubbed version "OTA-7 Atop". This OTA updates Pulse Audio, Morph Browser, Lomiri, and more. Ubuntu Touch is a great option for those that want to escape Apple or Google. What it lacks in app support it makes up for in stability and ease of use. They have a GUI installer that is available in multiple formats and supports a lot of devices which makes getting Ubuntu Touch installed an easy task.

The main website for the project is here:

The Linux Libre kernel has been updated to version 6.12. A whole bunch more blobs had to be removed to keep it fully libre. This continues to be one of the best kernels to use if privacy and security are your top concerns as it keeps closed source blobs to a miniumum that do God knows what. Updated my NovaCustom NV41 earlier today with no issues.

The main website for the project is located here:

https://www.fsfla.org/ikiwiki/selibre/linux-libre/

A good writeup of the release can be found here at 9-5 Linux:

https://9to5linux.com/gnu-linux-libre-6-12-kernel-released-for-those-seeking-100-freedom-for-their-pcs

The release notes for this update are available here:

https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/info-gnu/2024-11/msg00001.html

It seems that the Linux kernel may have some dark times ahead. Part of the release notes for 6.12 libre kernel is the following:

"Other upstream author-itarians are pushing for the kernel to tell on
you, the user, if you choose to avoid running untrusted code on your own
device, labeling your system as security-tainted. Information about
potential security issues is good, but pushing for the installation of
untrustworthy binary blobs isn't. If we're not careful, this
information will end up used by local and remote programs to refuse to
cooperate with us who insist in controlling our computing."

I've recommended @libreoffice as an alternative to Microsoft Office to at least two people over the phone today.

Prebuilt manufactured systems always seemed to have such crummy and accident prone BIOS update options. Always made me nervous.

This is on an HP ProBook 455R G6 with Ryzen processor.

Initiated a BIOS update from HP Support Assistant. Rebooted to a blank screen, two orange lights on the keyboard and spinning fans. Just stayed there.

Sinking feeling.

Did some research and found this document:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_3932413-2337994-16

Step 2 is what helped me.

I pressed and held down the Windows key and "v" at the same time, while holding down the power button.

Tried turning on again. It turned itself off after a few seconds. Tried turning on again and it showed the HP logo on the screen and resumed some kind of firmware upgrade operation.

Booted into the the operating system fine after that.

Strong feelings of relief !!!

Note to myself: initiate BIOS update from within BIOS using the HP network BIOS update feature instead of Support Assistant.

Help to keep doing good work! E.g., adopt an app, and KDE can share with the whole world how awesome you are and how much you're doing to support them.
