Clarification:

US Treasury coins are no longer real money... but silver and gold coins (along with other metals) are real money if valued at what those metals are trading at in the market.

US Treasury coins are currency.

Cash is useful to use, even the Federal Reserve tickets. It is at least a mostly private transaction, unlike credit cards or bank checks.

I just paid cash directly to a local farmer for food.

Some in Federal Reserve paper bills and some in coin.

Interesting, the coins are not issued by the Federal Reserve, but instead by the US Treasury.

Coins are still fake money, in that they are no longer backed by anything. They are issued by a government institution that is supposed to be "of the people", where the Federal Reserve has no such responsibility.
