One thing any investor has to do is decide what kind of investor they want to be. In the end you can be some kind of hybrid but even then you will probably have a focus area. For me that is dividend stocks. There are two main reasons I chose that path.

The first was a really old interview with Noam Chomsky I saw on YouTube. He went on and on about how the shareholder was bad because they would give the company some money, do nothing past that, and collect a dividend cheque in the mail every quarter. Now his intent may have been to dissuade the idea of a shareholder or dividends but it had the complete opposite effect on me, I now thought that sounded like a fantastic low effort way to make money. The second reason I chose dividend stocks as my focus was an interview I read about how Sean William Scott made enough money each month on dividends that he could never get a film role again and his house payment, car payment, and other monthly bills would all be taken care of just by the dividends.

That blew my mind. Up until that point I thought dividends were a nice cherry on top of a good stock and maybe I could use them to buy some fun items for myself but I had never considered the possibility that I could use them to pay bills. This changed my way of thinking o regarding my purpose for investing. My new first goal is to have enough monthly income from dividends that I can not work overtime to make ends meet. After that I would love it if I could pay all of my bills through dividends. Lastly down the road after I am retired monthly dividends could be the difference between enjoying my free time and having to take a part time job because my pension won’t pay my bills and the cost of living. Dividends are now my way of trying to achieve financial freedom.

Since those two interviews changed my way of thinking I was able to pivot what stocks I was investing in and my monthly dividends have went from $1.80 a month in August 2025 to $14.62 a month for January of 2026. This will continue to go up the more I hone my filters, get rid of old positions that don’t help my new goals, and continue to contribute.

Two other things I like about dividend stocks is that firstly I don’t have to sell any shares in order to get paid. I know that as a tiny retail investor my vote counts for little in the big picture but I still love voting and I would prefer to increase my voting power that have to sell shares like you do with growth stocks in order to make money. Secondly I love the fact that share price means very little with dividend stocks. The dividend is decided by the company and whether that share price jumps 20% or drops 50% I still get paid just the same. It makes the normal daily fluctuations of the market more background noise than chaos.

These are some of the reasons I chose dividend stocks as my focus area of investing. Whether any of it resonates with you or not I would implore you to start investing and saving for your future. Whether that be growth stocks, dividends stocks, ETF’s, mutual funds, crypto, bonds, commodities, or something else, be invested in something and be making progress. The worst investment you can have is nothing. Do your own research and ask your own questions and figure out what works for you.
