Well we've done it. Linux is on the home pc. We also went out and bought an old laptop with Linux already installed. We're using the laptop for our oldest's homeschooling. She's loving it and even learning a little about how Linux works. Not bad for a five-year-old.

She hasn't started programming just yet. We bought the laptop with Linux added and my wife has been putting the programs on for her to use. The plan is to teach her how to do the rest in the future. On the plus side, the kid loves her math, science and typing.
