@realcaseyrollins With all these shitty blocks built into software like Tusky, Mastodon.py, etc lately I've been thinking Gab definitely is rising above. There was no "retaliation" there except launching a new app store, no hardcoded blocks against others.

I was just talking in regards to moderation practices, between needlessly antagonizing "coomers" (condemning them is different, but Torba was definitely antagonizing them) and some shady bans of people for urging people to leave, I just don't trust/like Gab anymore. Nothing against the Gabbers tho, they're still real ones

I feel like if you get banned from Gab you must really be a troublemaker. The bar is set extremely low.
I also think many of the anti-Gab people are just vitriolic for no reason, and they've made hating Gab a part of their identity. I don't think Gab is lying about their numbers, but also IDGAF because user count doesn't really mean anything. They're just saying this to try to paint the admins as liars so they can continue to trash them in other ways.
The real enemy is Twitter. I've seen some of these anti-Gab people literally say "Twitter is better than Gab." They're not on the same side as us.
@alex Idr the details, cause I haven't really been in the same crowd as ex Gablins since I first joined Fedi in... July, I think? I remember claims that parody accounts of Torba were banned (no evidence, but realistically how could there be?) I also know that people have gotten banned for shilling other instances before, cause Gab's gotta keep raking in those boomer bucks. Can't have people leaving just because they provide a poor service.
That's not even the biggest issue though. Gab also blocks Tor and has a history of turning over user info to the Feds without a warrant, so they can't be trusted with privacy. Of course, there is never any transparency regarding anything they do, because Gab are probably the worst marketers on the planet Earth and if there is a way to make themselves look bad they will find it. Oh, and nevermind the unacceptably slow bug fixes that are only needed in the first place because the devs were haphazard and broke everything when they forked Mastodon. Even now, I'm pretty sure 90% of images from other sites still just don't federate to Gab for... who knows what reason? You will rarely ever have these issues with other "free speech" instances, but they're all concentrated here, wonder why that is 🤔
@alex Don't get me wrong people take Gab's failings way too personally, and it's annoying (or hilarious, depending on which side of the bed you wake up in) but it's not like people are mad for no reason. People invested a lot of time and money into this project that rarely delivers anything competent @realcaseyrollins @gab
