I think Chesterton defined religion as one's basic understanding of everything. Worldview basically.

Everyone can say they don't have a religion. Evangelicals may say they have a relationship, not a religion. Yet others define what they have as religion. Others say they have a lifestyle or an unbelief system or some other descriptor. At some point it's all religion.
