Programming was really, REALLY hard before the Internet. If you couldn't figure something out, you might just have to give up. I can't count the number of times I've solved a problem because of information on the Internet that I NEVER could have figured out on my own.

I remember trying to program on the C64 and just running into brick walls constantly. I still remember some of the problems, that could have been solved if I had a mentor. In retrospect my parents could have found me a mentor, but nobody thought of it I guess.

It wasn't too bad for me, I didn't have access to the internet and learned to code nearly completely through For Dummies books

Although perhaps that did come a bit after the internet, were those around before that?
