@realcaseyrollins I normally don't like Tim's stuff at all (I generally don't like talking head videos). I can feel where he's going here, but a lot of people can't just quit their jobs. I know I don't have the drive to be self sustainable (trust me, I've tried, twice https://battlepenguin.com/philosophy/perspective/a-tale-of-two-journeys/). I do like this clip and feel his frustration. If I hadn't just signed a new lease in April, I'd probably move to Texas right now and just volunteer on open source stuff.
@djsumdog Yeah, it can really be a battle.
BTW i didn't have time to read the entire article, only to skim it. What was it you were attempting to do independently?
@djsumdog Very cool! Yeah if you look at the rest of the thread from the original toot, I have a lot of ideas on making a company that could support independent content creators...the real issue would be getting enough donors, and convincing people to pour money into the company in order to fund it. The plan is to not only run instances but also blogs and video platforms. And I wouldn't deem it a success if I can profit off it, but if it's profitable for the actual users and content creators themselves.
I don't have all the pieces of the puzzle figured out. I'm just brainstorming atm.
