@jeremiah @ProfWorr @SmashCast traditionally, music is comprised of rhythm, harmony, melody, and sometimes lyrics. Some rap has harmony and melody, but a lot of it doesn't, and that's why some people say "it's not music". There was already a thing composed of rhythm and lyrics alone, and it was called beat poetry. It made no claims to being music.

I'm willing to accept rap as music due to its inclusion of harmony and melody in portions of the songs. I don't enjoy it. I don't like music that has rhythm as its primary focus, whether it's polka, Mexican music, samba, or whatever. I really prefer harmony and melody over a more monotone or even atonal style, just my personal preference.

Hold up:

Rap: not music, a style of speech

Hip-Hop: music, often accompanied by rap

A rap song is only a song if it accompanies a hip-hop beat.

This rigid, definitional division of “genres” you articulate here is as unwieldy as trying to make a rigid distinction between science & pseudoscience. But, I see what you’re getting at..

@realcaseyrollins @ProfWorr @SmashCast @jeremiah it's not beat alone that makes hip-hop music, but harmony, melody, and rhythm together that makes it music.
@Grandtheftautism @realcaseyrollins @ProfWorr @SmashCast @jeremiah Hip-hop is not so much a music genre as a very good moron detector. Never met a smart person that enjoys rap, IRL.
