Good on India for banning Tik Tok tbh.

Every time I've tried using Tik Tok it's blatantly obvious that it's designed solely for brainless consumption and instant gratification. Even more so than traditional social media (which is also a similar mess)

I dislike Tik Tok. But i also think people should have a right to decide what to use and what not.

@saiferion I do not support censorship. But I do support regulating or blocking companies that treat people exclusively as data points with no regard to their personal info. Which TikTok is a perfect example of.

Personally I'd prefer to see things like TikTok regulated harsher than GDPR and removed if they will not comply.

But TikTok is an app I suspect would never regulate. They'd only hide it better to appear as if they had and absorb any fines they encounter due to slip-ups. The same strategy Facebook seems to be using in the EU.
@saiferion Unfortunately I do believe the reason for the TikTok ban to be political tension between India and China.

But even if the reason is not what I'd go for, I do not agree that TikTok is something that is better off destroyed in its current state

@saiferion @quad I'm fine as long as I'm not forced to use it. I just wish people would think before they join a new social network especially one coming from China.

RIght. I would never touch that social app, not even with a stick. With China, there is always something up with their "generosity".

@saiferion @quad Also, I think we can strongly discourage people from using these apps by mocking Instagram and TickTock stars, and make them look like self-absorbed assholes. People used to do the same thing with bloggers back in the mid-2000s.

@xianc78 @quad
I really wish more people would adopt social networks where they can actually be in control of their data like Pleroma or Matodon... Sadly if there are no celebrities using them or if they are not easy to get into, their interest is null

@saiferion @quad I feel like people join the Fediverse for different reasons than Twitter or Facebook. Honestly, this feels more like a forum than a social network.
