@icedquinn @p @sjw@neckbeard.xyz @bagofshit @pernia I really do like Haiku and think it has better potential as a desktop OS than Linux. I just wish there were more software for it.

@xianc78 @p @sjw @bagofshit @pernia i've worked with an api clone of haiku. though the haiku devs sometimes wish they just made it a DE over linux, because the custom kernel hasn't done them any favors.

there's the mac route of building on FBSD or the insane asylum route of building on P9, although not using soros kernel does drop a lot of hardware support you need to be viable.

Haiku is supposed to be a clone and spiritual successor of BeOS. It wouldn't make sense for them to use the Linux kernel since it's nothing like the kernel that BeOS ran on.

how well documented is the plan 9 kernel :blobcatthink: i've only dealt with like, the rc docs and the 9p docs, but the 9p docs don't even include the wire protocol.

The kernel itself is written clearly enough that I know a musician that taught himself to program by spending a summer reading the Plan 9 kernel.

But here is nemo's excellent guide to the Plan 9 kernel source:

@p @bagofshit @pernia @sjw @xianc78 doesn't p9/inferno have derpy licensing?

you have to chinese firewall it if you don't want to inherit the weird bell licenses :blobcatsweat:
@p @bagofshit @pernia @sjw @xianc78 that's not as bad.

@icedquinn @bagofshit @pernia @sjw @xianc78 Inferno has Tk support, you could probably backport it to Plan 9 with minimal effort.
