It's probably the most popular alternative to official online console services. You would probably have a hard time finding people with niche games, but I'm pretty sure there would be enough when it comes to games like Mario Kart or Smash.

I don't have the time right now to read through it, but I doubt it's a viable replacement. Most people are lazy, including me. I doubt I'd find many people there, even for something as popular as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It was just an example, it gets worse the more niche or old a game is.
