https://twitter.com/SlimyQuagsire/status/1335354088968630274?s=20 Nintendo really doesn't like FreeMelee, to the point where they're willing to screw over all their competitive communities.
@ArdanianRight What the hell is going on?! There must be something else here, that we aren't seeing. They can't be this petty. This is starting to look very bad. As in "bad business practise" bad.

Maybe there's an old prophecy where Melee turns 21 years old and a Japanese ogre is summoned to destroy Nintendo. You know, things that happen in Japan but Western media doesn't cover. Ogre problems. This must be a matter of life and death for the company to take measures this drastic. #GameOgre
@rasterman Nintendo hasn't gotten along with their competitive communities really ever, even when it would obviously be good for business. They've tried offering token support in recent years but been super controlling while not being willing to invest money in the scenes. And the #FreeMelee stuff has completely blown away the illusion that Nintendo's ever done anything for their competitive communities. Nintendo's too stubborn to offer real change and has just been doubling down.
@ArdanianRight But they have been doing these tournaments that are livestreamed from the Nintendo account. It's like they do the bare minimum and when you think "it's OK, they are trying, it'll get better", then they do this.

I don't see the point in killing competitive scenes. Maybe they just think it's unhealthy to obsess over a game so much and the "that's not how you are supposed to play the game" attitude makes them do this.

I don't know. It's very strange without a *good* explanation from them.
@rasterman "What if we took all of Hirohito's advisors who still wanted to fight after two nukes and put them in a single corporate boardroom?" That's what we're dealing with with Nintendo's higher-ups.
@ArdanianRight @rasterman This analogy works better on the Melee community tho - their precious Melee is literally property of Nintendo, they're just the sad saps who have devoted their lives to it, so they're the ones up against an impossible opponent. Nintendo sits with pretty much all the cards here, and trying to wage a PR war against the company that you need or at least want the support of seems self-defeating. If these kinds of loud internet communities had ANY real-world pull, Pokemon Sword/Shield would have rightfully flopped due to all of GameFreak's lies and incompetence.
@ChristiJunior @rasterman There's no reason to not at least try to be diplomatic when dealing with your fanbase. A lot of their late Wii era missteps hurt them with the Wii U. Switch has too much momentum to not make a ton of money, but the loss of community goodwill does take its toll.
@ArdanianRight @rasterman The hardcore Melee obsessives have probably spent more to time bashing Nintendo's post-Melee game output than promoting it - all the biggest Brawl and Smash 4 Haters I've come across were Meleefags. These people are no strangers to relentlessly bashing Nintendo. They're fans of Melee, I'm less sure that they're really fans of the Smash Bros. series, let alone Nintendo.
@ChristiJunior @ArdanianRight @rasterman As a fan of Brawl, I am baffled enough at the inclusion of slipping and smash balls and comparatively sluggish movement and K.O.s that I'll empathize with the people who haven't come back until Ultimate, or who are convinced that Sakurai isn't worth supporting for his hatred of fans of the series (he was clear with his intentions to make Brawl "less competitive").

At the same time, melee people could at least try what Them's Fightin' Herds did and just reskin it to look like something original.
@PorkCow @ChristiJunior @ArdanianRight While Brawl is my most played Smash game, it's my least favourite. Me and friends shared the same points you mentioned. RNG tripping was just Sakurai tripping on something else. I can't believe they'd add something like that. Even if the game is not meant to be competitive, that's just retarded. No one's gonna like losing because they tripped. ffs

I don't know what the other part is about. Are you talking about Project M?
@rasterman @PorkCow @ArdanianRight I think the fact that Tripping only appeared in Brawl is a pretty clear admission that it was a mistake. The idea was probably that luck-based mechanics in a party game is Kosher, but tripping just pissed people off because it so clearly clashed with the rest of the game. It's the kind of thing Mario Party players might have tolerated, but which even casual Smash would have been annoyed by.
@ChristiJunior @ArdanianRight @PorkCow I had basic bitch girls playing the game complaining about tripping. lol No one liked that.

I don't even think that works in Mario Party. "Oh, Luigi slipped off the ball and lost due to RNG. Oh, well, better luck next time!" Granted I have only played Super Mario Party, but it does seem to involve skill or effort at the actual mini-games.

Imagine Sakurai giving his RNG input in other games:
- SMB: Mario sometimes gets a cramp in his leg and doesn't jump when the jump button is pressed.
- Zelda: Link's hookshot mechanism fails randomly and doesn't shoot
- F-Zero: Blue Falcon might malfunction at random and lose 20% speed for 10 seconds at a time.
- DK: he might eat a banana that went bad (no visual indicator, as it is RNG decided the moment you get it) and he takes damage.
- Splatoon: your Inkling can't decide if it's a kid or a squid and starts switching uncontrollably for 5 seconds at a time.
- Fire Emblem: your character gets stressed by the battle and moves to the wrong square. Sometimes.
- Kirby: nothing, because you don't mess with Sakurai's son.
