@judgedread I dunno, I've seen lots of Trad Catholics be able to go the distance when it comes to hating on the current Pope. Personally I don't really get why they don't just go Protestant (they have way more in common with Martin Luther than any recent Pope) or Orthodox, but that's just how they roll. There are *some* otherwise conservative Catholics who'll act as apologists for Commie Pope, but I don't hear from them often.

@ChristiJunior @judgedread I'm Catholic and I fucking hate the Pope with a passion. He's the reason I stopped going to church. I wish more Catholics would speak out on this, but even before Pope Francis there were still members of my church (including clergy) who were open to things like civil unions for gays or even full blown gay marriage.
But to be fair, the Catholic church has never actually favored capitalism. The economic ideology that is favored by most Catholic clergy is sort of a third-position system called Distributism which favors small family owned businesses and views both capitalism and socialism as inefficient.

Economics are a different matter, it wasn't like John Paul II or Pope Benedict XVI were big on unregulated free market capitalism either.
Pope Francis however is just such a snake on theology. One thing I've noticed is that he somewhat regularly does these interviews with atheist Italian journalist Eugenio Scalfari, who doesn't record the interviews and might not even keep transcripts of them from what I've heard. Scalfari will basically after every interview report that Francis has rejected long-standing Christian beliefs (like saying there's no hell), and the Vatican will in response say that this isn't true, Scalfari is misrepresenting what the Pope said in the interview.
This has happened multiple times....and yet Pope Francis keeps doing interviews with this guy, who according to the Vatican keeps Lying about what the Pope saying and causing these major theological scandals. I see no reason for Francis to keep doing interviews with Scalfari unless the whole point is chipping away at established "conservative" Christian dogma with repeated shock headlines, while still maintaining plausible deniability. It's just so low and cowardly.
