@coolboymew @coyote Holy crap, another human being who knows that Elebits exists.
No joke, I read about that game in Nintendo Power prior to it's release (yes, I read Nintendo Power in 2006), and pre-ordered it, second Wii game I owned after Twilight Princess.
I still own the little plush Elebit they gave out with pre-orders, I don't immediately know where it is, but it's definitely at my parents house somewhere.

@indigo @coyote I was quite poor back then, so I was happy to find it cheap enough used a few months after

Game is actually a pretty fantastic play, it's not much, but that not much is fun as hell

The Wii truly was the last bastion of mid-tier games made by big devs. The console has a shitload of fantastic gems like this that was generally ignored by the big press back then during the dumb AAA gold rush

Still have these tracks in my phone

Too bad most of it was buried under a mountain of shovelware, but that's a guarantee for any insanely popular console. However, I think the Wii was more egregious since it has the motion control gimmick, so every no-name casual dev was throwing everything they can at it just to see what would stick.

I agree that the Wii was the last bastion of mid-tier gaming though. It probably helps that it was on a technical level of the sixth generation of consoles (the last good console generation), and despite being the first Nintendo console with a somewhat in-depth online, it wasn't a victim of the cancers that came with it like microtransactions.

My biggest regret with the system was not buying anything off the Wii Shop Channel because the VC was never good since. Plus, there are clearly some hidden gems on WiiWare that are never brought up.

@xianc78 @indigo @coyote basically

The Rebirth games, MaBoShi (I cannot stress this one enough), Madstones, Pokemon Rumble (Yet to beat this Mewtwo fucker) and probably a few others that even the /v/ wiki missed, there was some decent stuff on there

I'm surprised they even got Dive: The Medes Island Secret. I used to pirate Wiiware games for the heck of it, and while there was a lot of trash, there were some surprising games too

@coolboymew @indigo @coyote
I heard that they had some very strict file size limit, but that was understandable given the limited amount of internal storage the Wii had, so it's no big surprise that most of it was shovelware trash, but it was really cool to see Nintendo opening up to indies years before the whole indie craze happened in the early 2010s.

>I used to pirate Wiiware games for the heck of it
Oh yeah. I also regret not modding it, but it was my family's console and I didn't want to brick it. The Wii seemed to have one of the most vibrant homebrew scenes, maybe besides the PSP, DS, and Dreamcast.

@xianc78 @indigo @coyote it is, and most likely still is one of the best console emulator machine

The Wii is as easy as ever to hack with Letterbomb I believe

We hacked it very early and it was nice to play burnt games here and there, but I still tried to purchase what I wanted

I believe the Wii U is even better for emulation now? Especially due to the gamepad. How easy is that to pirate?

@coolboymew @indigo @coyote I heard Nintendo tried to update the Wii U a while back just to stop piracy even though they were supposed to be done with updates on that system.

@xianc78 @indigo @coyote it's not as if you absolutely had to update it at this point. If you remove the network capabilities yourself, who cares now?

@coolboymew @indigo @coyote It just goes to show that Nintendo would go out of their way to stop piracy and homebrew even on their obsolete consoles.

@xianc78 @indigo @coyote Well, technically it's not totally dead yet, still stuff releasing on the eShop, but still
Follow

@coolboymew @indigo @coyote You could probably say the same with the original Wii though. Most recent release was back in July 2020. I don't know why it's still being supported. Most of them have probably been collecting dust for years in people's closets.

@xianc78 @coolboymew @indigo @coyote Wii got Just Dance for a while just for nursing homes and fitness centers.

@coolboymew @indigo @coyote There's also Let's Sing and re-releases of Retro City Rampage. Just checking the Wikipedia list, it seems like only Australia and parts of Asia are getting new releases.The strangest being Spongebob Truth or Square since that's a tie-in for a ten year old TV special. I guess it's a budgeted re-release or something like that.

@xianc78 @coolboymew @coyote The Wii did have a really high install base, so I guess it's not too surprising that it's still being supported to some extent, even if it's just for causal stuff and shovel-ware.
The last official PS2 game was released in 2013 after all.

@indigo @coyote @coolboymew The Wii is outlasting the PS2 now, but I doubt it's going to be around for much longer. I think Nintendo only kept it alive because the Wii U wasn't doing well and the Wii was obviously insanely popular. But with the recent success with the Switch, I don't see any justifications for keeping it alive at this point. I'm pretty sure the homebrew community will continue making games for it if there is a demand.

@xianc78 @coyote @coolboymew You're probobly right on that. I also anticipate Wii games are going to shoot up in price soon too, they already have to a certain extent.
As a side note, Nintendo's gotten way worse about the planned scarcity stuff recently so if you want any Nintendo stuff produced in the last few years get it while you can (I should be taking my own advise here seeing as I still do not own a Switch).
@indigo @xianc78 @coolboymew No games I want to play on switch, and I'm patient enough to wait for emulator compatibility to improve. There are hundreds of games worth playing on the umpteen consoles I already have, and those games are fairly priced.

@indigo @coyote @coolboymew
>also anticipate Wii games are going to shoot up in price soon too, they already have to a certain extent.
Wii games shot up in price back during quarantine. I guess people tend to feel nostalgic during extreme boredom and isolation, or it's just those who weren't lucky enough to get Ring Fit Adventures for the Switch and were looking for an exercise game. Right now, it seems like 6th gen consoles are the ones people want to go back to as kids who grew up with them are now adults. I think we need to wait a few years until it's the same with the 7th gen (possibly even more because it lasted much longer).

@xianc78 @coyote @coolboymew Oh damn, I hadn't checked prices in a while but you're right. And the whole nostalgia thing for gen 6 makes sense, the PS2, Original Xbox, and PS2 all came out around 20 years ago now, so kids who grew up on those are now in their early-mid 20's, I'd give gen 7 another... five years so to be at the same place.
It gets more subtle every cycle though. When the generation that grew up on NES came of age it was 8-BIT everything, everywhere, that was game related. With the world how it is now though, and the lack of the same intersection between demographic age and disposable income that was present in the early 2000's, I don't think nostalgia pandering/marketing will never hit that pitch again, atleast as far as gaming is concerned.
@xianc78 @coolboymew @coyote *GAMECUBE, Original Xbox, and PS2 (I listed PS2 twice, my mistake).
