@xianc78 @Alex_Linder They can, but by at least setting it up yourself, it shows an understand of what a VPN is, what it actually does, and the chain of things you have to trust. Vultr, Hetzner, Linode and other can easily be syphoning up all your data. For the super paranoid, VPN to a host/vm you pay for, create a Tor proxy on it and funnel everything through that.

For the super extra paranoid: setup a wireguard/VPN on a host you pay for, proxy tor traffic through it, then buy a VM through a hidden service on Tor using crypto currency you pay for with cash; and chain all your traffic through both of them.

@djsumdog @xianc78 i have good reason to believe protonmail.com offers a good level of basic protection.
