honestly cell is a based architecture and it's a shame the only piece of consumer hardware using it really is the ps2

@chj0 I was just going to ask that wasn't it the PS3

But yes it's really cool

@SigmaOne the ps2 and its emotion engine has a pretty similar architecture but it's not cell, yeah
@chj0 I'm going to say it wasn't. The PS2 was MIPS-based while the PS3 was PowerPC-based. I really liked the Cell BE but things like its circular memory bus sounded like a nightmare to program for.

@SigmaOne
@thatbrickster @chj0 @SigmaOne the emotion engine had a couple coprocessor thingies for 3d calculations that in some ways is similar to the SPE coprocessors on the Cell. But only very generally.
@Moon Ah yes, the microVUs (VU0 and VU1). What a fucking pain it was to develop for at the time.

@SigmaOne @chj0
@thatbrickster @Moon @SigmaOne @chj0 So did the PS2. You just don't hear about them because people don't meme them comparatively speaking
@allison @thatbrickster @SigmaOne @chj0 Saturn was a 2D console that could do 3D. PS2 could be coerced to do 2D but was not good at it and Sony USA refused to promote 2D games for the system like Mega Man.
@Moon @SigmaOne @chj0 @thatbrickster No vendor was supportive of 2D honestly, people wanted their cinematic jarpigs and movie games and Sony was more than happy to oblige

@allison @Moon @thatbrickster @SigmaOne @chj0 There were a few 2D indies that were lucky to get console ports during that gen. Alien Hominid is probably the most notable.

@xianc78 @Moon @thatbrickster @SigmaOne @chj0 Honestly, objectively speaking, the 360 was the best thing to happen to the console market that decade, since it meant Microsoft actively went out of their way to promote 2D to a wider audience and subsidize it (particularly in Japan)
