wonder how many times they're going to pull the "OH NOES ANOTHER VARIANT" scam
there are over 400 known variations of the coronavirus known as the cold alone.

@icedquinn That is a very disingenuine interpretation, and really your choice of "variation" from a technical position is flatout wrong.

The common cold is not "THE coronavirus" nor is it a variant of it... "THE coronavirus" refers to a specific species SAR-COV-2, which has only a small number of variants.

"Coronaviruses" mean something completely different than "THE coronavirus". That refers to a class of viruses of which there are many (400+) strains, of which "THE" coronavirus is only one.

Strains are to species as variants are to subspecies. A cold virus is NOT a variant of "THE" coronavirus.

@freemo so you believe a global lockdown every time a highly mutatable thing mutates is a viable strategy?

@icedquinn How did you get that from my statement? I didnt even address lockdowns at all.

@freemo because the point of mentioning the cold having 400 known mutations is to highlight that coronaviruses are basically uncontainable, from ones we know about, and i'm assuming you didn't respond just to be pedantic.

@icedquinn Sure, but what you stated is flat out incorrect, the cold doesnt have 400 mutations, nor does "THE" coronavirus. The cold is not descriptive of a type of virus nor are they all varients of some class.

The cold is a set of symptoms and is defined as such, independent of the virus that cuases it. Only about 15% of people who get the cold have some type of Coronavirus class of infection (none of which have any relationship to THE coronavirus). The vast majority of cold cases are caused by an entirely different and unrelated class of viruses (rhinovirus). There are also about 6 other categories/classes of viruses that can all cause the common cold.

your entire interpretation here is complete wrong.

@icedquinn Not at all, the distinction is quite important... there are **not** 400 varients of the coronavirus known as the cold... There are many different viruses that cause cold symptoms, none of which have any relationship to "the coronavirus"

You could probably say the same thing about COVID.

@xianc78

I havent seen any evidence to suggest that a virus other than SAR-COV-2 can cause COVID-19. However there are a few variants of SAR-COV-2 for sure, but its all the same strain as far as we know.
