@judgedread It's incredibly rare you don't get an autocracy. When the states start to ignore federal law, let's hope it's slow and careful, yet firm. States will look different. Expect new natural borders. @xianc78
@xianc78@judgedread They are also the only state that provides more money and resources to the federal government than they pull in. The other big factor is that any new division need to include a bill of rights similar to the US constitution as a central bedrock, most importantly, the freedom of speech, firearm arms, due process and rights against illegal search and seizure. No one really cares about quartering troops.
This doesn't guarantee a free state (fucking China has freedom of speech in their constitution), but anything less can and will eventually lead to authoritarianism (and be sure, there will be many divisions that will explicitly ban misinformation).
