It's for several reasons I'm sure: Chris Chan back in the day was the prime example of an internet nobody wanting attention and using Wikipedia as proof.

Now it's both the weird effort to rehabilitate Chris (before the motherfucker incident) as a poor trolling victim who didn't do nothing, and then afterwards Chris being a very inconvenient truth about certain communities. The extremely online troons see people like Chris, Yaniv, GameStop Ma'am as a bigger threat to their image than someone like David Reimer. Ditto when a pedo is outed, they want you to use the right pronouns and want to remind you that it's not a trans thing every time someone does something dumb or fucked up in that community.
