Talking of ads and that discussion about weird clickbaity ad networks I had this morning. The reality is, how profitable are these really? How actually viable are they in the long run? I mean, there's just so many times that you're gonna catch someone clicking on these, them realizing it's garbage and then noticing these pattern in the weird clickbaity ad networks and stop clicking on them?
The reality with the "ad supported Internet" is that the reaction against ads is 100% justified and deserved
I remember even 15+ years ago some sites were ad ridden hell holes, pop-ups, ads following your cursor, noise making ads, ads taking 20mb of bandwidth when you had a fucking bandwidth limit, shitty clickbait ads, etc.
That's even without forgetting that Youtube/Twitch ad networks are shit. The ads are shit, they usually only have like 1 to 3 max at a time so they're repetitive as shit, even more than on TV, and they're usually annoying and not fun. No really, how many times do I need to see these fucking Sharmin cartoon bears wiping their fucking asses? How many times do I need to see Pepsi tell me about fucking Pepsi in my life?...
Ads were probably the best when the Internet still had mass personal pages and small website instead of corporate everything and corporate useless "content". You could have a dude pay you 20$ for a small banner on your website to his indie stuff and that'll be it. No ad networks, no nothing (so it's hardly automatically blockable too). But no, gotta have an ad network, gotta know the (probably mostly useless) analytics, gotta know these clicks, and gotta serve ads that nobody actually wants to see
