The virtual machine part looks replaceable with some effort at a glance, but I'm not sure about the game engine part.
Maybe godot could be a replacement for the game engine part?

@Suiseiseki @lanodan There are libre fantasy consoles out there like LIKO-12 but I don't think there are any that are compatible with PICO-8.
