@ItsSkyDragonz A lot of people. It actually did well in the US for a while, until the PS2 came out. It only failed because Sega was already bleeding money from the Sega CD, 32X, and Saturn, and it was just too late to save itself.

@xianc78 @ItsSkyDragonz also the high profile split between USA Sega and Japan Sega fucked them over.

No really, there were some high profile clashes between staff and departments and the suicidal USA leadership in the Saturn era.

@pawlicker @ItsSkyDragonz In hindsight, they should've stuck with the 32X and had that be the Genesis successor. It was actually briefly successful in the US. Sega of America was right about the Saturn.

The saturn sold like hotcakes in Japan though and more worldwide.

The problem with the 32x is well, try programming for it. You'll understand why it was a dead-end.

@pawlicker @ItsSkyDragonz I thought the Saturn was worse to program for due to having too many processors during a time when that wasn't common.

So did the 32x...the thing with the 32x is you had to deal with the cruft of being a Genesis addon among other things. For example the "background" layer (as the AVGN showed in his one video) was done with the Genesis as the 32x video hardware was literally a packed pixel framebuffer. Carmack liked that, but it wasn't good for 3d unless you did it all in software.

It wasn't as bad as the Jaguar mind you and it could pull off some 3d stuff much better, but it was all in software. Something like Darxide was a full on software renderer.

@pawlicker @ItsSkyDragonz So, it was basically Sega's SuperFX chip but as an add-on. Just looking at the specs, it doesn't seem like it improved any sound capabilities.

OMFG a friend had this & was soo fukkin excited we played and it both went...well that was fukkin shit...
It actually did, it had PCM. Chaotix used it for PCM drums and other games used it for sound effects. Remember the Genesis couldn't exactly do PCM without using the "PSG as PCM" trick.

There was no long term way for the 32x to last unlike the Saturn, the 32x was a stopgap solution designed by businessmen who thought it was the coolest idea.
