I'm pretty sure this Invidious situation might be resolved, but that doesn't change the fact that if you make videos you shouldn't rely on YouTube. PLEASE consider uploading to other sites, including hosting them on your own.
@xianc78 Of all of the different sources I push through mpv, youtube is the only one that consistently changes things and breaks functionality. Other video hosts are happy to serve up files on ancient versions of yt-dl without any issue.
@wrongthink Luckily, there are a few well-known YouTubers (even non-political ones) that are also uploading to LBRY/Odysee (even though it also has flaws). It gives me some hope, but they almost never advertise their Odysee presence.
@PurpCat Never heard of that. And looking it up doesn't show me anything.
HTML5's <video> tag should've killed YouTube. Part of the reason why YouTube got so popular was because people were tired of having to install multiple plug-ins just to watch videos. Some websites required Windows Media Player, others required QuickTime, others required Flash, others required RealPlayer. YouTube, using a flash-based video player at the time allowed pretty much anyone to watch their videos because almost every Internet user had Adobe Flash installed.
