be glad you never looked into the early Mastodon lore. If you did, you'd switch to Pleroma/Misskey.

@PurpCat been wondering about Akkoma tbh. For right now though, at least glitch-soc is building out some of the stuff that vanilla masto is lacking

Akkoma is a very "iffy" fork of Pleroma IMO. Namely it removes some features (like the shoutbox), but most notably the developers are notorious for breaking things Pleroma does just because they don't like the people using some feature, leading instance owners to have to try to "remove" the patches removing said features to even keep the instance going. It's a total mess compared to just running stock Pleroma. I've never been able to see anyone tell me anything good Akkoma does, and even custom emojis are now in Pleroma and the other main fork of it (Rebased/Soapbox).

Install the source version, OTP is extremely dated or has been for a while.
@PurpCat @smallpatatas

dont run akkoma
as a person who runs it i will say PLEASE DONT USE IT
pretty much upstream pleroma has become nearly indistinguishable from it (at least for the features that matter)
along with that akkoma breaks too many things. chats are gone, mrfs are fucked beyond repair and amny other things

just use pleroma and install a recent version of the frontend from admin-fe and you will be good
Put it this way as well, of all the time I've seen the Akkoma project I have never seen the Akkoma project do anything notable to distinguish itself from Pleroma aside from custom emote reacts (which are backported into Pleroma and Soapbox thanks to popular demand).

As much as Rebased (the Soapbox fork of Pleroma) is critiqued as being "gleasonware" or dumbed down for Twitter users; Rebased with Soapbox has a few things going for it. Namely, Rebased is designed to be Pleroma modified somewhat to emulate Twitter's UI while adding in other "social network" features such as events and whatnot and that is pretty much where all the design goals go with it. While politics might have had something to do with the final decision, what is not disputed is that Alex wanted to go in one direction and the Pleroma guys wanted to go in another.

Akkoma has done nothing of the sort other than be talked about more in certain circles. That's it. In every way it's worse than Pleroma, and I see nothing but complaining from people who move from Pleroma to it.

@PurpCat @theorytoe @smallpatatas The admin of DRC said that it's much better with server load than vanilla pleroma. They switched to it after the influx of Twitter users to the Fediverse created more Mastodon instances and DRC couldn't handle all those new connections with Pleroma.
