seems sad that the @firefish seem to be adopting the same toxic culture as the mastodon community
@CentaurBreeder @animeirl @firefish I mean
Calckey was like akkoma userbase wise except they're moving to the new model of wanting to be dollar tree Eugen/mastodon. Hence calc moving towards being a firstname lastname online instead of a pseudonymous furry. That's just how I see it as an outsider with experience in adjacent communities.
@Pawlicker @CentaurBreeder @firefish they're definitely trying mimic mastodon but you don't have to copy the exact same toxic callout culture of that community to go mainstream
I don’t care what software people use but gargron has, intentionally or not, fostered an incredibly toxic community around his software and firefish seems to be deliberately trying to copy it.
@animeirl @Pawlicker @dragnucs @CentaurBreeder @firefish The early days of Mastodon were wild. You got THESE people that jumped in because the press called it a nazi-free controllable software and man

The amount of those people screaming at Gargon and him just taking it was absolutely freaking wild
@dragnucs @CentaurBreeder @Pawlicker @firefish @animeirl @coolboymew I started my server in Feb 2016. I was around before that a few times but didn't stay. I was on quitter.se for a while and got banned and I tried running a pump server for a while and got almost no communication.
@Moon @CentaurBreeder @firefish @animeirl @coolboymew @dragnucs So I started using fediverse (circa 2017) on SPC and similar instances. There were several major issues. The most prominent issue however was the Skype problem, and this is still a very real thing with the fediverse. Back in the days of Skype, there was always "that one freetard" who would try to get the group on Mumble and it always failed and everyone went back to Skype. It's always excuses or "we're not signing up for that site lol just use Twitter" when there is a very real case of battered wife syndrome, none of them see themselves coming across like a normie bitching about his job but breathing down your neck to get one too.

Later on I heard stories about groomers on the fedi, drama about how "xyz instance owner is this or that", and similar stuff and was put off as well. Only in 2021 did I begin to use fedi seriously and at that point I had no attachment to my former friend circles as they all now had stripper names or tried to get down with Big Tech Employee (tm) Twitter.

@Moon @CentaurBreeder @animeirl @coolboymew @dragnucs @firefish There are also many reasons why normies won't touch the fediverse as of now, which include:
Instance blocking fragmentation forcing you into an instance that is jannied to shit to talk to someone who insists on using one with jannies.
The only artists are Japanese or on baraag of all places, or mastodongers blocking the entire fedi.
*wagie boss voice* "why aren't muh numbers high enough"
Instance owners shutting down (this is such a serious issue that Bluesky namedropped this as why they like to have a singular identity even though all of us know how this could be misused. If this sounds stupid, remember that a SomethingAwful moderator bought that site out because their posting careers matter that much to them, and ditto with Twitter users who don't scrub their old tweets to keep their numbers high despite making them prone to cancellation.
Low amounts of interaction as opposed to Twitter (if you don't spend money on Twitter blue) if you're a nobody screeching into the void.
Some poster/eceleb is only on Twitter.
Mastodon's UI is trash

@Pawlicker @CentaurBreeder @firefish @animeirl @coolboymew @Moon @dragnucs I just wish that there were more gamedevs on here. We can have something akin to the /adgd/ communities you see on many video game imageboards, but the vast majority of fedi gamedevs are on the fediblock side of the fedi. That just shows how pozzed the modern gamedev community is.

I don't want to shill my games on Twitter. I can no longer see an ethical reason to use it.

@dragnucs @Pawlicker @CentaurBreeder @firefish @animeirl @coolboymew @Moon Neither would work. Last time I checked, peoplemaking.games will ban or defederate anyone for being "apolitical".

@xianc78 it just means you won't find much people over there.
