@icedquinn If I were to buy a TV, I would probably buy it from GPX because not only do they sell their products on their actual website, they are also the only TV manufacturer I know of that still makes dumb TVs.

@xianc78 thats pretty neat but cost more than this one did. i need to unbox it and make sure it will boot without internet.

if it doesn't i'll just return it and put a retired computer monitor up instead.
@xianc78 i was gonna do a little iptv but it turns out those are all either pirate radio or appshit and i'm not interested in having to rent cloud dvrs and shit workarounds when i could just :blobcatpirate2: do a little sailing.

le shrug. family wanted me to have a tv, so i do. i haven't much need of it.

@icedquinn
>IPTV

Isn't that something that MSN tried to get into back into the 90s but failed?

@xianc78 there are some formats with the same name but its basically just online streaming.

you get a playlist m3u file representing channels, where each entry is another playlist m3u representing the stream sources. its a thing that is very much alive (but mostly you don't get the m3us anymore, you get "xtream codes") but there are basically no legitimate ones.

italy, being a rather silly country, decided to convict xtream for having too many naughty clients even though all they provided was management portal software.

the legitimate places use a combination of widevine bullshit and custom apps (or white label rented ones), but they are ultimately still just bog standard MPEG-DASH/HLS under the hood like anyone else.
@PurpCat @xianc78 there were also protocols called "iptv" and decoder boxes.

its just we also use it to mean tv over internet.

(some of those protocols were neat though. alternative timeline where we got to have SCTP and reasonable broadband multicasting)
