What are these “seed oils” people speak of?
Oils derived from a variety of seeds such as soy, avocados, and peanuts; effectively any type of non-animal derived oil, other than olive oil, which gets a pass because of reasons.
I'm half-joking, because complaints about "seed oil" tend to degrade to "any plant derived oil other than olive oil", and a lot of people lump in non-seed-based oils like soy, peanut, and avocado. The most common complaints I see are either about plant based oil production processes being unnatural or including harmful additives (often by people who unfairly compare traditional small scale butter and animal oil production to modern industrial grade oil production, rather than more accurately comparing modern animal oil production to modern plant oil production or traditional animal oil production to traditional plant oil production) or about different ratios of various types of fats and acids among seed oils vs animal oils (claiming that seed oils are higher in alleged "bad fats" and animal oils are higher in alleged "good fats"). Personally, I think that most of the argument comes down to kneejerk reactions to veganism and vegetarianism, since the people who push against seed oils tend to be involved with conspiracy theories about the government trying to force everyone to become vegan, and often view animal fats as good just because it pisses vegans off. Whatever valid arguments people have against particular types of oils get drowned out by these stupid culture war arguments 99% of the time, and those arguments against specific types of oils get stretched to include literally any plant derived oil (other than olive oil) regardless of whether or not it's actually applicable. I think that olive oil wouldn't get universally singled out as the only acceptable plant based oil if it wasn't just a stupid culture war thing.

@Alex @arcana I think butter (namely organic butter from grass-fed cows) and animal fats are superior to most seed oils, but it is generally agreed upon in alternative health that coconut oil blows both of those out of the water, but good luck finding restaurants that cook with coconut oil unless you live in a tropical area.

Regardless, the fact of the matter is that it is much easier to find organic, grass-fed beef and dairy products than it is to find organic peanuts, at least from my experience. Peanuts and soybeans are often genetically modified so they can be more resistant to pesticides.

Honestly, I didn't know many people who were talking about this shit outside of alternative health circles. A lot of them are conspiracy theorists, but honestly, before COVID and before Trump appointed RFK, most mainstream RWers didn't pay attention to this shit outside of the soy meme. Do you really think MAGAtards gave a damn when their idol is known for bringing McDonald's during board room meetings? From my experience, the alternative health community are mostly libertarians and non-culture war leftists. Just go to your local health food store to see what I'm talking about.

I see it on fedi fairly often, I think it was a pretty niche thing prior to now.

No, I think they just hopped on the bandwagon because the meme went mainstream and are now parroting whatever nonsense they happened to see in a random soyjak meme, or whatever medium they're using now, as if it were divine gospel. I don't think most of them have any ideological consistency, I think they're practically automatons. It's the new meme so whatever they happened to learn about this morning is what they've wholeheartedly believed for their entire existence and they'll die upon this hill for the rest of the day, and come tomorrow morning they'll have forgotten they ever cared about it when the new meme drops and becomes the focal point of the day's new identity.
