I have a relative who has had her credit card details stolen on so many occassions that we've lost count.

She clicks every email link. She signs up to "tarot of the day" and "spirit guide" text message scams. She buys things like the GeoCleanse. She's been in MLMs and near-cults. She's never met a grift she didn't fall for.

No amount of user training is ever going to get through to this person.

She'll lose her whole life savings before she takes a moment to imagine that an email from her own personal fairy guide *might* be some sort of scam.

It is tempting to say that if you're silly enough, you deserve what you get. But it isn't true. People who make poor decisions need protection too.

This is who I imagine when I imagine the user who needs protection.

We need regulation.

Trying to protect all of society from the lowest common denominator often makes everything worse for people trying to exert control over their own lives.

You cannot protect people from their own bad decisions without putting them in prison.
@djsumdog @keira_reckons go figure the first response on “my aunt can’t stop getting scammed” is the local jeet saying you can’t protect everyone so just let her get scammed lmao

"local jeet" .. I'm an American. I've always been an American, a legal one at that. The last time I was in India was in the 90s, as a Christian missionary.

You immediately bring my race into things instead of addressing any part of an actual argument. What a fucking horrible response, from what I can only assume is a total pathetic piece of shit. Fuck you and whatever the fuck kind of person is obsessed with viewing everything through the lens of my race. It's everything I fucking hate about Fedi.

What about that? My parents came here legally. My dad literally worked decades in power plants keeping your lights on. I was born legally to parents who got their greencards through the process established by law.

I'm sorry if you're too stupid to understand what laws are.
@djsumdog @keira_reckons @Paleface @sapphire "I'm just as american as you, see this piece of paper says I am!"
"btw I'm a rootless cosmopolitan, I'm not christian and argue that it's core tenets are fake"
I guess that whole religious freedom thing doesn't have anything to do with being an American? I was born here, went to public schools alongside lot of other people who never treated me any different.

It's amazing how people on about how I'm "American cause piece of paper" and yet they have no fucking idea what makes anyone an America. Are they more America cause they got a piece of paper in 1850 or 1750 instead of 1950?
@djsumdog @keira_reckons @Paleface @sapphire There's a big difference between freedom of religion within christianity and absolute freedom to choose your own arbitrary morality, and they thought so in the past as well, look at how they exiled the mormons and distrusted the catholics.

Not sharing a common morality with american culture is a big deal for the american identity question when you're already a complete foreigner.
And yet Mormons and Catholics are still in America and free to practice. Are they not Americans by your values?

I could go into deists, quakers or the massive differences between early Puritans and various protestants within the first century of the country, but I feel like all that would be lost on you.

I think the great irony is that the majority of Americans and even the majority of American conservatives would find your views foreign.

These WN types hate conservatives and believe that they are not worthy of that label.
