A few causes of e-waste:
- Planned obsolescence by large companies. Microsoft
- Design that makes repair and upgrades difficult: Apple
- regular people buying new cheap junk

@matthew @ptribble A lot of people are too afraid to buy used because of concerns that the product they buy might be partially broken. That was always my concern, but recently I discovered this local used game store that also sells used electronics and almost all of their stuff works like they are fresh out of the factory.
I'm probably going to buy used almost exclusively for now on.
