That answer could fill pages, and I may not explain it well enough.
A real ID is currently a physical ID card whereas a digital ID is not physical. The real ID has a digital code behind it, but I cannot answer how extensively it is yet used in the digital ecosystem.
Digital ID is a requirement for CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency) which is the total surveillance and control of how we transact currency. Say goodbye to freedom.
We are experiencing a gradual shift to digital ID systems, and certain events are being used to justify and require it. We are also being nudged constantly as more activities require identification. I resist as much as possible by using cash wherever possible and only buying online where I do not need to identify myself. The options are shrinking.

You can still buy most things anonymously through a proxy service like the one on ThinkPenguin. You basically give them money and they will buy it on your behalf. Granted, it is ultimately a band-aid solution because these stores can (and probably will) black lists these services as customers, but it's something to look into while you still can.
